First of all, why should you hide
your Whatsapp images? The reasons are many; you may want to hide your photos
from some friends or simply because your Whatsapp photos are too many and you
simply want to clear them without deleting. Whatever the reason, let’s talk
about the how, since we’ve discussed the ‘why’. If you want to know how to hide whatsapp photos from gallery, then read on.
Hiding Whatsapp images on your
android device is pretty simple and doesn’t require or take much, and it is a
very easy process for you to reverse. One thing you should note is that you
don’t need to root your smartphone. It revolves around a file called .nomedia. What
does a .nomedia file do? Well, any folder containing a .nomedia file won’t be
scanned as the presence of .nomedia file simply dictates to the system to
ignore all contents of that folder. As you can see, the simple trick here is to
create a .nomedia file in any folder or album you wish to hide and the contents
of that folder will never appear in your gallery, as simple as that. Now let’s
focus on the topic of discussion.
i.
Fire up the file manager app you installed
(preferably ESfile explorer which we are using as example).
ii.
You should locate your Whatsapp folder after
opening the file manager app which mostly is located in the Micro SD card. Tap
on Whatsapp>media.
iii.
At this point, simply open the Whatsapp image
and tap on the ‘add’ (+ sign) icon which is located at the bottom left of your
screen. Clicking on this brings the ‘add’ checkbox giving you room to add a
file.
iv.
You should now create a file called .nomedia and
hit ok (take special note of the ‘.’ Before the ‘nomedia’ making it ‘.’
+ ‘nomedia’ = ‘.nomedia)’). You will be notified that a .nomedia file has been
added.
v.
After this is done, return to your gallery app
and you won’t see your Whatsapp folder because it has vanished, leaving no
trace! Amazing, isn’t it?
After applying
these steps but your Whatsapp folder did not vanish, then you should clear your
gallery cache by navigating to settings>apps/apps manager (this might vary
as it depends on your smartphone’s manufacturer). An alternative is to delete
the .nomedia file. If you check carefully, you’ll see that the .nomedia file is
not visible in your Whatsapp images folder. What you should do now is enabling
hidden files in your file manager. Tap the phone and globe, a blue little icon
located at the top left hand corner of your ES file explorer and scroll
downwards till you come across the on/off switch for ‘show hidden files’ and
make sure it is set to on.
On completing
the steps above, take a view of your Whatsapp images folder where your hidden
files will be visible. You need to delete the .nomedia file by long pressing it
and all your Whatsapp images will reappear in your gallery app.
NOTE If
you Whatsapp images don’t reappear, try wiping the cache and reboot your phone.
Also, remember to turn off hidden files when you want only specific photos to show
up in every folder of your file manager.
